The Local History Museum is in the tower of the former Kurtrierische Burg (Trier Prince Electors’ Fortress). It has displays on local history as well as a large collection of wood furniture by Michael Thonet (1796-1871). The fortress was erected in the early 14th century by the archbishop of Trier to enforce his rule on the town and to enhance tolls collected on the Rhine. In contrast to other Rhine castles, this one is at river level and not in the hills.
